Jungian functions and MBTI®
not the official instrument
People search for an MBTI test and land on function language, or the other way around, and the words get used as if they were the same instrument. They are not, and this page is here so you can see what you are taking before you begin.
What Jung wrote
Jung’s Psychological Types (1921) describes four functions and two attitudes. The type, when he names one, is a sketch of which function leads and whether it is turned inward or outward. He did not publish a multiple-choice inventory, and he did not treat the remaining functions as a simple list of letters to collect.
A Jungian functions quiz, if it is honest, therefore starts with the eight function-attitudes and only afterwards asks which classical stack those scores resemble. The letters, if they appear, are a shorthand for that stack, not the thing that was measured.
What MBTI® is
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a separate, trademarked instrument. It sorts preferences along four dichotomies and reports a four-letter type. It has its own items, its own manuals, and its own publisher. It is not this site, and this site is not affiliated with it.
Many popular “MBTI tests” on the internet are unofficial quizzes that borrow the letters. Some of them never score the functions at all. Others guess a function stack from the letters after the fact. That last step can be useful as a reading, but it is not the same as asking you about Ni, Te, Fi, and Se as Jung described them.
What this quiz does
You rate fifty-two original statements about how each function-attitude works in you. The first stretch looks for the leading function. If two functions are still close, a follow-up asks which sentence is more you. The result is eight 0–100% bars and a suggested type whose Beebe stack fits those bars, with the lead weighted first.
The quiz, the scores, and the choice of Hero / Heroine and Parent stay free. Your Type in Depth is a longer reading of the eight roles, growth, and shadow. It is not an MBTI report.
When to use which
If you need the official MBTI instrument for work or certification, take it from a licensed provider. If you want an educational reading of Jung’s eight function-attitudes, scored in the browser with no account, this quiz is built for that, and the letters it shows are a way of naming the stack, not a claim to be Myers-Briggs.
